Veilwhispers are faint, fragmented voices heard within the minds of those who have survived direct exposure to the Veil or its influence. They remain after the immediate danger has passed, lingering like an echo that refuses to fade.
The whispers rarely speak in complete thoughts. They surface as broken phrases, half-remembered names, cryptic warnings, and fragments of painful memories. Whether they come from the Veil itself, from something moving within it, or from wounds left upon the mind remains unknown.
Mental Effects
Veilwhispers are usually faint enough to be mistaken for distant voices, intrusive thoughts, or memories rising without invitation. Those affected may hesitate suddenly, lose focus during conversation, or turn toward a sound no one else can hear.
The whispers may repeat words spoken long ago, dredge up moments of grief or fear, or offer warnings whose meaning becomes clear only after the danger has already passed.
Common experiences include:
- Hearing fragmented phrases without an identifiable source.
- Unwanted memories surfacing with unusual clarity.
- Sudden feelings of dread, suspicion, or familiarity.
- Difficulty distinguishing a whisper from one’s own thoughts.
- Brief lapses in concentration or moments of hesitation.
- The sensation that something unseen is observing or addressing them.
When the Whispers Grow Louder
Veilwhispers often intensify during moments of fear, exhaustion, grief, or extreme stress. The more strained the mind becomes, the more difficult the voices are to ignore.
They may also grow louder when the affected individual approaches a Veil-corrupted object, creature, or place. In some cases, this reaction acts as an early warning that corruption is nearby. In others, the whispers become so confused and overwhelming that they provide no useful guidance at all.

Warnings or Deceptions
Some survivors believe the Veilwhispers warn them of hidden danger. Others believe the voices are manipulative, using fear and memory to draw the listener toward a particular action.
No reliable method has been discovered for determining whether a whisper is truthful. A warning may prevent disaster, lead someone into danger, or mean nothing at all.
Certain individuals interpret the whispers as messages from the Old Gods, while others consider that belief dangerously misguided. Most who study the phenomenon advise treating every message with caution.
Warning: Veilwhispers should never be followed blindly. The voices may imitate familiar people, repeat private memories, or offer instructions that appear comforting while concealing harmful intentions.
Living with Veilwhispers
Those who experience Veilwhispers often develop personal methods for enduring them. Some carry familiar objects to ground themselves in the present. Others record what they hear, compare repeated phrases, or seek the company of those who share the same affliction.
For many, the greatest comfort is simply being believed.

- A character hesitates during a critical moment as several whispers begin speaking at once.
- A familiar voice warns the character not to trust someone they have known for years.
- The whispers become unusually loud near an object that appears ordinary.
- Two survivors hear fragments of the same message and attempt to piece it together.
- A painful memory repeatedly resurfaces, but each retelling contains a new detail.
- A character begins treating the whispers as guidance from an Old God, while others fear they are being manipulated.
- The voices suddenly fall silent after years of constant murmuring, leaving the character uncertain whether to feel relieved or afraid.
The Echo That Remains
Veilwhispers are not always loud, violent, or immediately dangerous. Their power lies in uncertainty. They make the listener question memory, instinct, and even the privacy of their own thoughts.
Those who survive the Veil may return to the world beyond it, but some carry a fragment of its voice with them forever.
